Render, texture coatings and plaster finishes

Six kinds of work, all aimed at the same result: a wall surface that is flat, even and finished cleanly at every edge.

  • Cement render

A sand-and-cement render applied over brick and block in a base coat and a finish coat. It can be left smooth for painting or sponge-floated for a fine, even grain, and is a common way to modernise the look of an older brick house.

    Typically used on

    • Clay and concrete brick walls
    • Concrete block and besser block
    • Front facades and fences
  • Acrylic render

Render with acrylic polymers in the mix, which adds a degree of flexibility and adhesion. It is generally chosen for lightweight and panel substrates, and for finishes that need a finer, more consistent texture.

    Typically used on

    • Fibre-cement and lightweight panels
    • New builds and extensions
    • Masonry where a fine texture is wanted
  • Texture coating

A decorative coating rolled, sprayed or trowelled over existing render or other sound surfaces. It changes colour and texture in one system, which makes it a practical option for refreshing a wall without stripping it back.

    Typically used on

    • Existing render that is sound but tired
    • Feature walls and entries
    • Matching extensions to an older finish
  • Plastering

Plaster finishes for internal walls and ceilings, set and trowelled to a flat surface that takes paint evenly. Good plastering is mostly invisible; you only notice it when it has been done badly.

    Typically used on

    • Internal walls and ceilings
    • Renovations and room alterations
    • Surfaces being prepared for paint
  • Surface finishing and repairs

Cracked, drummy or damaged render is cut back to sound material, patched and re-finished so the texture and level blend with the surrounding wall. Repairs are also the right first step before any new coating goes on.

    Typically used for

    • Hairline and settlement cracking
    • Hollow or delaminating render
    • Damage around fixtures and openings
  • Commercial buildings

Render, texture coatings and plaster on commercial projects, from a single shopfront to a block of units. Work is planned around access, other trades and the hours the site is open.

    Typically used on

    • Shopfronts and offices
    • Townhouse and unit developments
    • Commercial facades and boundary walls

Choosing a finish

Cement or acrylic?

The right render depends mostly on what it is going over. As a general guide:

Cement render

Suits solid masonry such as brick and block. It is a traditional, hard-wearing coat that is usually painted once cured.

  • Best over brick and block
  • Smooth or sponge-float finish
  • Painted after curing

Acrylic render

Suits lightweight panels and situations where a little flexibility helps. It can be finished in a fine, consistent texture.

  • Suits panel and lightweight substrates
  • More flexible than straight cement
  • Fine, uniform texture options
